Jack Marriott wins 50m Fly at British Championships

On day 2 of the 2011 British Swimming Championships was the 50m butterfly final, in which Oxford swimmer Jack Marriot beat the clear favourite Antony James (who had previously competed in both Commonwealth Games and European Championships). Even after qualifying second fastest for the final Jack’s win went against expectations, shocking both the audience and himself. Commentators were baffled by the lack of information they could find about him; they knew his birthday and not much else. Subsequently when interviewing Jack journalists were stunned to discover that this was only the second time Jack had ever swum this race in a 50m pool, the first being just a few weeks previously at the BUCS long course championships.  Jack is now training at Loughborough University, in an Olympic development squad for London 2012. We wish him all the best for the future.
